Pom Pom Camp
Pom Pom Camp... Where Wild Things Roam in an off-the-beaten track location in the heart of The Okavango Delta in Botswana
Pom Pom Camp has always carried a bit of mystery with it. Some say its name is rooted in Phokoje, the Setswana word for “jackal,” reflecting the camp’s playful energy. Others believe it’s inspired by the shape of the island, a local plant, or the soft, peaty soils that define the Delta. Whatever the true origin, one thing is certain: Pom Pom has become one of the Delta’s most loved safari secrets - known for its unpretentious charm, excellent game viewing, and that timeless Okavango feel.
In its early days, Pom Pom was a humble hideaway for adventurous spirits seeking a raw and immersive safari experience. Today, it remains true to that legacy. Set around a hippo-filled lagoon and shaded by tall trees teeming with birdlife, the camp blends nostalgic safari tradition with just the right amount of comfort.
This is a camp for purists and romantics - for those who want to walk softly, drive off-road, and feel completely immersed in nature. Think leopards slinking through the trees, wild dogs racing across the floodplains, elephants wading into sunsets, and starlit evenings by the fire, swapping stories with fellow travellers.
Activities at Pom Pom shift with the rhythm of the Delta. Year-round, guests can enjoy game drives, night safaris, and walking explorations. During the annual flood season (May to September), mokoro excursions and boat safaris offer a water-based window into this unique ecosystem - floating silently through channels lined with reeds and lilies.
The camp is small and intimate, offering just eight classic Tented Suites and one spacious Family Suite. Each is raised on wooden decking and offers beautiful views of the lagoon and surrounding Delta. Inside, canvas walls and wooden floors blend rustic charm with soft luxury. Guests enjoy private decks with outdoor seating, a cosy lounge area, ceiling fans, and thoughtful touches like writing desks, USB and international plug points, tea and coffee stations, and open storage space. En-suite bathrooms feature flushing toilets, double vanities, and open-air showers, while one suite includes a romantic outdoor bathtub - perfect for honeymooners or those chasing golden hour in style.
The main area - a thatched, open-sided lounge, dining, and bar space - is the social heart of camp, where days end with drinks around the firepit, and wildlife sightings are relived with laughter. There’s also a swimming pool for cooling off in the midday heat, a small safari shop, and complimentary laundry services. Powered by solar with a backup generator, Pom Pom offers limited Wi-Fi connectivity - just enough to stay in touch, but not enough to distract you from the moment.
More than a camp, Pom Pom is a feeling - laidback, wild, and endlessly captivating. It’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left, echoing like a jackal’s call across the floodplain.
