Karisia Walking Safaris
A Unique Camel-Supported Luxury Lodge & Mobile Safaris, Karisia Walking Safaris offers the Ultimate Adventure in Laikipia, Kenya
Karisia Walking Safaris offers one of the most unique and immersive safari experiences in Africa — walking safaris supported by camels through the wild and beautiful landscapes of Laikipia, Kenya. Far from the confines of a vehicle, guests explore this remarkable region on foot, engaging all the senses while discovering the land’s rich natural and cultural history in vivid detail.
These safaris are available in two distinct formats: Mobile Walking Safaris, where guests walk from one remote campsite to the next with camels carrying all equipment, and Base Camp Safaris, where guests stay at the stunning Tumaren Camp or a private satellite camp and enjoy daily excursions on foot, by camel, or by vehicle. Both styles offer a rare opportunity to slow down and connect deeply with the environment, while maintaining a high standard of comfort and personalized service.
Each walking safari is guided by experienced local Laikipia Maasai and Samburu guides who share their deep knowledge of the land, wildlife, and culture. Along the way, guests encounter an extraordinary diversity of large mammals — from elephants and big cats to endangered species like the Grevy’s zebra, African wild dogs, and the highland hartebeest. The region is known for having the greatest diversity of large mammals in Kenya. In addition to wildlife, guests walk through geologically dramatic landscapes along the edge of the Great Rift Valley, scattered with archaeological relics — stone tools, pottery shards, ancient graves — that speak to thousands of years of human history.
Tumaren Camp, Karisia’s base, is a luxurious and peaceful retreat situated on a private wildlife conservancy. Originally the home of Karisia’s founders, Kerry Glen and James Christian, the camp sits beside a salt lick that regularly draws a wide array of wildlife. It features seven spacious ensuite tents with flush toilets, hot showers, and beautiful views of the surrounding plains. Some tents are designed for families or small groups, with partitions and extra beds. A 20-meter pool overlooking the landscape provides the perfect place to relax after a day of adventure.
Activities from Tumaren include guided nature walks, game drives, camel rides, rock climbing, picnics in the bush, visits to local markets and schools, and even games of frisbee with local students. Whether you’re tracking wildlife on foot, watching animals gather at the salt lick from your tent, or soaking in the pool as elephants pass by, Tumaren offers a perfect balance of comfort, discovery, and serenity.
Karisia Walking Safaris is built on a foundation of conservation and community partnership. The company manages large tracts of conservation land, supports local employment, participates in wildlife monitoring, and works to control invasive species and protect native flora and fauna. A portion of every safari goes directly toward conservation initiatives, helping to fund sustainable land and wildlife management, as well as educational outreach in neighboring communities. Guests are not just observers but become part of a greater effort to preserve the unique biodiversity and cultural heritage of Laikipia.
Every itinerary is customized to suit guests’ preferences — from short stays at Tumaren to extended mobile safaris across remote terrain. Whether you're looking for luxury, adventure, or a meaningful connection with nature, Karisia delivers a safari unlike any other. With gourmet meals, expert guidance, and a deep respect for the land, Karisia’s safaris embody their motto: “Luxury without compromising adventure.”
