Mkambati is a biodiversity hotspot, sitting at the heart of the Maputaland-Pondoland region—one of only 34 global biodiversity hotspots. The reserve’s unique sandstone soils and warm climate nurture 2,200 plant species, nearly 200 of which are endemic, including the rare Mkambati palm. Across the sweeping grasslands, you’ll spot zebra, eland, kudu, red hartebeest, and more, while keen birders can look out for Cape vultures, grey crowned cranes, southern ground-hornbills, and swamp nightjars—one of the world’s southernmost populations. The nearby cliffs of the Msikaba River shelter one of the last remaining colonies of Cape vultures in the Eastern Cape, a globally significant breeding site.

From Land to Sea: Marine Life & Conservation:

Beyond the shoreline lies the Pondoland Marine Protected Area, a vital sanctuary teeming with marine life. Declared a no-take zone, this stretch of coast safeguards fish stocks, coral reefs, and marine mammals.

Visitors in June, July, or October may witness the humpback whale migration, while massive shoals and playful dolphins populate the warm waters year-round. The area is also at the epicenter of the annual sardine run, one of the largest marine migrations on the planet.
